Singing can be particularly effective for improving mental health and wellbeing, and combatting loneliness and isolation.

Since 2023 our Singing for Health program has enabled local residents who are interested in improving their health and wellbeing through singing to have fun and meet like-minded others in their local community.

The program is facilitated by a professional music therapist and focuses on singing skills and breath. No special singing abilities or prior experience are required.

The Singing for Health program was initially funded by the Foundation for Rural & Regional Renewal (FRRR), and has been sustained through further grants and generous local community donations.

The Circle Foundation hosted four occupational therapy students on placement from the University of Canberra to evaluate the initial project. See below for an summary of their evaluation.

What our participants gained from being a member of our Singing for Health Choir -

“It lightened my mood and lifted me a bit and connected with other people doing the same activity.”

“I gained a sense of engagement and relaxation through group participation without an expectation of individual engagement.”

“Breathing chest expansion [helped me] gain a greater sense of uplifting.”

“A positive step towards socialisation. Normally socialisation terrifies me all the time.”

What is Social Prescribing?

Social prescribing is the practice of health professionals using resources and infrastructure to link patients with social activities in their community in an effort to address the social determinants contributing to poor health and tackle the epidemic of loneliness and social isolation in modern communities.
